Known to have been cultivated in Ancient Egypt, Rome and Greece, cowpea is an edible bean that can be grown in areas of high temperature, low rainfall and poor soil yet still produce a good crop. Annual world production of cowpea is estimated to be 3 million tons, with the West African region, particularly Nigeria, producing the largest share of that, followed by Brazil. |
