Thought to have originated in South America, the tomato is now grown around the world and made into sauces, pastes, purees and juice, even dried and powdered. More than 80 million tons of tomatoes are produced annually. Primary exporters are the EU, USA, Turkey, India and Italy, while primary importers are Germany, USA, UK, France and the Netherlands.
