The oil palm grows in tropical areas around the world, and its fruit provides two kinds of edible oil: reddish palm oil, which is extracted from the fruit itself, and colorless palm nut oil, which is extracted from the kernel of the fruit. World production of palm oil in 1999 was close to 18 million metric tons. Malaysia and Indonesia produce 80% of this supply, and China, India and the EU are the top importers.
