Sesame is a drought-resistant plant native to Africa. Its tiny seeds produce an edible oil used for cooking, and used industrially in paints, soaps, cosmetics, perfumes and insecticides. Annual world production of sesame in 2000 was just over 3.5 million tons. China, India, Sudan, Myanmar, Uganda and Nigeria are major producers, while Japan, Egypt, Korea and USA import the most overall.
